Membership that raises your professional standing
IAB membership gives your expertise professional recognition and your career a clear route forward.
Use protected designatory letters, strengthen your knowledge through high-quality CPD and become part of an international professional community committed to raising standards across accountancy and bookkeeping.
Most complete applications are assessed within 2–3 working days.
Professional recognition earned through knowledge and experience
IAB Professional Membership recognises bookkeepers, accountants and payroll professionals who meet our standards of knowledge, experience and professional conduct.
Membership is earned, not automatically granted by holding a qualification. Every application is individually assessed. We recognise relevant qualifications from the IAB and other established awarding bodies, while experienced professionals can demonstrate their competence through our rigorous alternative assessment route.
Successful applicants receive protected designatory letters, specialist technical support, industry updates and high-quality Continuing Professional Development. Membership demonstrates that your professional standing has been independently assessed and reflects your commitment to ethical practice and continuing development.
As your expertise grows, you can apply to progress from Associate to Member and ultimately to Fellow.
★ More than professional recognition
The IAB is an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation and an HM Treasury-appointed statutory supervisor for Anti-Money Laundering. This brings qualifications, professional membership and regulatory oversight together within one organisation committed to raising standards. Eligible members can also apply for the statutory AML supervision required to run their own practice.
The IAB membership grades
The IAB offers three progressive grades of professional membership. We assess your qualifications and experience and award the grade that reflects your standing — each carries its own protected designatory letters.

IAB-supervised practices receive exclusive access to AML Complete, our purpose-built compliance platform. Reserved for supervised practices, it provides sophisticated tools for risk assessments, due diligence, compliance records and ongoing AML management.

Professional membership FAQs
Everything you need to know about joining, qualifying, renewing and AML supervision.
Who can become a member of the IAB?
IAB-UK membership is available to residents of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Professionals based in international markets are eligible to join with IAB Overseas membership.
What is IAB Professional Membership?
IAB Professional Membership recognises bookkeepers, accountants and payroll professionals who meet our standards of knowledge, experience and professional conduct. Membership is earned, not automatically granted by holding a qualification — every application is individually assessed.
We recognise relevant qualifications from the IAB and other established awarding bodies, while experienced professionals can demonstrate their competence through our rigorous alternative assessment route. Successful applicants receive protected designatory letters, specialist technical support, industry updates and high-quality CPD, and can apply to progress from Associate to Member and ultimately to Fellow as their expertise grows.
What are the different grades of professional membership?
The IAB offers three progressive grades of professional membership:
- Associate (AIAB) — for those with a Level 2 qualification or equivalent, plus relevant experience
- Member (MIAB) — for established professionals with a Level 3 qualification or equivalent
- Fellow (FIAB) — our highest grade, for those with a Level 4 qualification or equivalent and at least five years' experience
Separately, Student membership is a mandatory requirement for anyone studying towards an IAB qualification. The grade you're awarded is determined by the IAB based on your qualifications and experience.
What qualifications do I need for professional membership?
Membership is open to individuals who hold a relevant accountancy or bookkeeping qualification at Level 2 or above from the IAB or another recognised awarding body, a payroll qualification at Level 3 or above, or an equivalent UK or international qualification. Qualifications are assessed alongside the relevance, depth and currency of your professional experience.
I'm skilled by experience but without formal qualifications — can I still be a member?
Yes. Professional expertise is not acquired through qualifications alone. If you have developed substantial knowledge through your career, the IAB provides a rigorous alternative route: complete an industry-standard online knowledge assessment through a recognised provider, demonstrate that your knowledge meets the standards expected of an IAB professional, and have your expertise and experience assessed for the appropriate membership grade. To get started, contact the membership team at membership@iab.org.uk.
What documents do I need to provide with my application?
Provide evidence of any relevant professional qualifications (UK or overseas), copies of any accountancy, bookkeeping or payroll software training certificates, and an up-to-date CV — your experience is a key factor when we decide the grade you're eligible for. Every application is assessed individually, so the more relevant supporting information you provide, the sooner we can confirm the most appropriate grade. Apply here.

How long does it take for a membership application to be approved?
Most complete applications are assessed within 2 to 3 working days. Processing times may vary depending on the completeness and accuracy of the information provided. If anything is missing or unclear, we'll contact you directly, which may extend the timeframe. Providing all requested information and supporting documents up front helps the process complete as quickly as possible.
When does my membership start and when will I need to renew?
Your membership begins in the month your application is approved, once your subscription and required documentation have been received. Membership is renewed every 12 months, and we'll contact you four weeks before your renewal date to help you renew without interruption. At renewal you'll also provide a current basic DBS certificate (issued within the previous six months) and your CPD record.
Can I progress my membership grade in future?
Yes. As your expertise grows you can apply to progress from Associate to Member and ultimately to Fellow, by providing new evidence of relevant qualifications and/or additional professional experience gained since your original application. Each request is individually assessed on the evidence submitted.
What happens if my membership lapses?
If your membership isn't renewed by the expiry date, it will lapse and access to all membership systems and benefits will be suspended. You won't be entitled to use membership designatory letters during this period. If your membership lapses, we'll contact you with information on the steps required to reinstate it.
What are DBS checks and why are they necessary?
What is a DBS check? A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check reviews your criminal record and confirms whether you have any convictions for a relevant offence under the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Regulations. Relevant convictions may legally prohibit registration for AML Supervision.
Why does the IAB require one? Integrity is a key requirement across the financial services sector, and the IAB requires a current basic DBS certificate as part of the approval process — issued within the previous six months at application, and again at each annual renewal.
Which type is required? The IAB requires only the Basic DBS check. Apply directly through GOV.UK, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI (Northern Ireland), as appropriate. We only accept a certificate issued via GOV.UK or an approved Responsible Organisation — please check the current approved list before using a third-party provider. All DBS information is handled in strict confidence.
What is CPD and how much do I need each year?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. IAB members complete the required number of CPD points for their grade of membership each year (equivalent to 30 hours / 30 points), keeping your knowledge current and supporting the next stage of your career. All CPD submitted must be verifiable, and you maintain your own CPD record to submit as part of your annual renewal. Much of your CPD is included through the IAB Knowledge Hub, powered by AccountingCPD.
Why do we need to do CPD each year?
CPD is the ongoing process of learning and improving skills to stay current with industry developments. For finance professionals it maintains knowledge, enhances technical and management skills, and supports long-term career growth. The IAB requires members to complete CPD annually as part of maintaining professional standards.
Does the IAB provide AML supervision for my practice?
Yes. The IAB is an approved statutory Professional Body Supervisor and can provide AML supervision for eligible members operating in the UK. Under the Money Laundering Regulations, anyone providing accountancy, bookkeeping, tax or related services to the UK public within scope of the Regulations must be registered for AML supervision before trading. To apply, you must hold Professional Membership at Member (MIAB) or Fellow (FIAB) grade and have an established or proposed UK practice. Contact the membership team for your application pack, guidance and compliance templates.
Can I speak to someone directly if I have questions?
Yes. Our membership team is available by both phone and email. Phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm — call the team on +44 (0)208 187 8888. Alternatively, email membership@iab.org.uk and a member of the team will respond as soon as possible.
